Madras Boat Club Team wins Trophy

The Madras Boat Club (MBC) boys and girls team, consisting of 14 team members - 7 boys and 7 girls - has won the overall trophy for boys and girls at the Calcutta Rowing Event for the Madras-Calcutta Millennium Championship Trophy.

This event is conducted every year on Independence Day. Madras and Kolkata host the event on alternate years. This year’s MBC boys and girls travelled to Kolkata to take part in this prestigious event.

Neville J. Bilimoria, Captain of Boats, Committee Member, Madras Boat Club, said, "Rahul Baligha beat Amit Singh in the boy’s single Scull event by 1 length. The boys team, consisting of Rahul Baligha, Niranjan, Palaniappan, Arjun Anand, Rahul Gopinath (Cox) beat Anurag Kar, Saddam Husain, Abheshek Basu, Indrinal Chowdhury, Ishan Phadmis in the boys fours by 2 lengths."

Added Neville, "Keerthi Ramesh beat Meenakshi in the girls’ single scull event by 3 lengths. The girls’ team, consisting of Keerthi Ramesh, Anisha Simon, Radha Yuvaraj, Pooja Balu, Fazila Husain (Cox), beat Amanda Hymes, Madhurima Das, Sunirta Sen, Anisha Simon, Sanju Mandal in the Girls’ Fours by 3 lengths, thus wrapping up the competition on a winning note."

Generally, the winners’ points are gathered only from the boys team events. This year Calcutta Captain of Boats, Girish Phadnis, and Neville, jointly decided to include winners’ points from the girls team events also and championship trophy for the girls. Madras Boat Club girls proved their mettle and contributed fittingly to win the championship trophy.
